City of Grants Urges Wildfire Prevention as Fire Season Intensifies As wildfire conditions intensify across the region, the City of Grants is reminding all residents and visitors to take wildfire prevention seriously. A burn ban is currently in effect within city limits, prohibiting all outdoor burning of weeds, brush, and natural vegetation. Cibola County is under Stage 1 Fire Restrictions, limiting open flames and certain outdoor activities across the surrounding area.
The City is working in partnership with the Cibola National Forest and National Grasslands and other fire management agencies to raise awareness and reduce the risk of human-caused wildfires—still the leading cause of wildland fires in New Mexico.
Simple Steps to Prevent Wildfires:
Never burn outdoors on windy days—even if no formal restrictions are posted
Fully extinguish campfires and never leave them unattended
Use ashtrays; do not discard cigarette butts on the ground or from vehicles
Avoid welding or using spark-producing tools near dry vegetation
Keep driveways and properties clear of dry brush and flammable debris
Everyone has a role to play. Creating defensible space around homes, following posted restrictions, and practicing fire-safe habits can make a major difference in protecting our community and first responders.
